What Makes Our Sea Islands Unique

Our Sea Islands are known for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife. They support a diverse mixture of habitat types including lush maritime forests, expansive salt marshes, and picturesque dunes.

Native plants are the ecological basis for all native wildlife that calls these habitats home. These plants evolved over thousands of years to become especially suited to local environmental conditions and wildlife has adapted to become dependent on them.

Now, our Sea Islands host an amazing 20 species of mammals, over 300 species of resident and migratory birds, 30 species of reptiles, thousands of invertebrates, and nearly 70 threatened and endangered species. Learn more about what makes these habitats special.

Strategic Plan 2030

In 1997, the Kiawah Conservancy, now Conservancy of the Sea Islands, was founded to preserve the unique balance of nature and development on Kiawah Island and protect the Island’s natural beauty for the enjoyment of future generations.

Since then, the Conservancy has focused on preserving properties, community education, protecting natural habitat, and sharing with the world what a remarkable place Kiawah Island is.

The Conservancy has achieved much success over the years. Now, with decades of knowledge and experience under our belt, we seek to chart a path forward and build on that momentum. Through our 2030 Strategic Plan, we are laying a foundation to guide our growth as we strive to dramatically extend our reach and broaden our impact.

Join us in our efforts to ensure that the natural beauty and ecological health of Kiawah Island is preserved for generations to come.
