Closing the Gap

The preservation of 4360 Betsy Kerrison Parkway serves as an excellent example of collaboration between a landowner and a land trust. The land owner, Rich Thomas, and the Kiawah Conservancy established a strong relationship since our conservation efforts expanded on to Johns Island. Rich, a longtime resident of Johns Island, community activist, and supporter of all things conservation, has supported our work in many ways and now at the highest level through direct land conservation.

After acquiring two properties on Betsy Kerrison Parkway in 2023, 4360 Betsy Kerrison Parkway was one of our top projects for 2024. This property lies directly between 4368 and 4346 Betsy Kerrison (preserved in 2023). Preservation of this property is key to establishing contiguous land preservation and prevention of wildlife corridor fragmentation.

Rather than listing his property on the open market, Rich chose to work with the Conservancy to see this land preserved in perpetuity. “I was excited when I was approached with this idea by the Conservancy,” said Rich Thomas. “Their work on the surrounding properties was a huge accomplishment for the entire community. It was a no-brainer for me to contribute to their successes with my land. Selling my property to the Kiawah Conservancy did not only fulfill my wishes for the land but also benefits everyone. Working with the Conservancy to see this property preserved was the best possible outcome.”

Over the past year, the Conservancy worked diligently, developing a vision for the Betsy Kerrison properties and acquiring grant funding from both the Charleston County Greenbelt Program and the South Carolina Conservation Bank. This is often a lengthy process but the landowner was willing to give the time needed to make this deal happen.

Today, we are excited to announce the fee-simple ownership of this roughly 9-acre tract extending from Betsy Kerrison Parkway to the marshes of Bohicket Creek. This property will become part of a larger project, creating a nature area for public enjoyment and wildlife. From maritime forest to marshland and even a large hummock island, this property will forever serve the natural resources of the Lowcountry.

We thank the landowner for trusting in the Kiawah Conservancy to be stewards of this land and believing in our mission for our sea islands. This land and its conservation values are now protected, FOREVER!
