Ben & Jerry’s of Freshfields Village is a six-time volunteer sponsor for the monthly Island Litter Sweeps, an effort coordinated by the Kiawah Conservancy and South Carolina Aquarium. Franchisee, Andrew Lee, had a relationship with the South Carolina Aquarium doing beach sweeps before opening the Ben & Jerry’s shop at Freshfields Village. He mentioned that it seemed natural to get involved once they had a local presence.
For each Ben & Jerry’s sponsored sweep, they have provided coupons for all participating volunteers. “With our shop being mostly tourist-driven, we definitely want to reach our local customers as well. Having these coupons is our way of giving a little bit to the local community and letting them know we’re here to serve them too,” said Andrew.
When asked why volunteering for the litter sweep efforts is important to him, Andrew said, “The community gives so much to our shop, it’s only right to give a little back. Our area is so naturally beautiful and we hope that us being a part of the litter sweeps can be a small help in keeping it that way!” Ben & Jerry’s friendly staff, Andrew, and his two young boys have participated in multiple Island Litter Sweeps over the past two summers. We appreciate their positive attitude, big smiles, and hard work as they’ve worked with the Conservancy staff, Aquarium volunteers, and other island volunteers to keep our sea islands’ beautiful landscapes free of litter.
Ben & Jerry’s will sponsor our upcoming Litter Sweep on Saturday, August 17. We hope you can join us, meet their staff, and get your Ben & Jerry’s coupon! If you can’t make it on August 17, volunteers meet every third Saturday from 9-11 am at Mingo Point at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (876 Kiawah Island Parkway). Everyone is welcome and all materials are provided.
