With the increase in storm surges and the decline of marshland habitats, monitoring the health of our marshlands has become essential. We are grateful to our graduate intern, Autum Blanchard, who has centered her thesis on developing protocols to help us continuously measure the health of these critical ecosystems.
In collaboration with the Conservancy’s ecological health and conservation coordinator, Lee Bundrick, Autum has established monitoring plots throughout the marsh. Using a PVC grid system, we can assess the area for key indicators of marsh health, including invertebrate populations and plant vitality. The grid system provides standardized sampling areas, allowing consistent data collection over time. By hand-collecting data within each plot, we can closely observe details that may indicate shifts in marsh conditions.
The presence and abundance of marsh invertebrates, such as fiddler crabs and periwinkle snails, are especially valuable indicators of overall ecosystem health. These species are highly sensitive to environmental changes, making them ideal for assessing biodiversity and habitat stability. Additionally, we can monitor plant health within each plot, noting factors such as vegetation cover, species diversity, and growth patterns. Healthy plant life supports erosion control, habitat structure, and the broader marshland food web.
With these monitoring protocols, we can track trends and detect changes over time, providing crucial insights into the resilience of our marshlands. This work not only enhances our understanding of these ecosystems but also lays the groundwork for informed conservation efforts to protect and restore these valuable habitats.
