When most people think of bees, they picture the familiar honey bee buzzing from flower to flower or returning to its hive with golden pollen. Honey bees certainly play an important role in agriculture, helping pollinate many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we enjoy every day. However, they are only one small part of a much larger story.
South Carolina is home to more than 500 species of native bees, each uniquely adapted to our local ecosystems. These remarkable pollinators evolved alongside our native plants over thousands of years, forming relationships that support healthy forests, marshes, meadows, and the wildlife that depends on them. While honey bees often receive the spotlight, our native bees quietly provide an extraordinary ecological service that is essential to the health and resilience of our natural landscapes.
Although they are often grouped, honey bees and native bees serve different roles. Honey bees were introduced from Europe in the 1600s; they are now primarily managed by beekeepers for honey production and agricultural pollination. Much like cattle are raised for beef or dairy, managed honey bees are considered an agricultural or “crop” species because they are intentionally maintained to produce honey and
pollinate crops.
Native bees, on the other hand, are wild pollinators that naturally occur throughout our region. Bumble bees, mason bees, mining bees, sweat bees, leafcutter bees, and carpenter bees are just a few of the many species found across South Carolina. Most are solitary, meaning each female builds and provisions her own nest without the help of a colony.
One of the biggest surprises for many people is that most native bees don’t live in hives at all. In fact, nearly 70% of native bee species nest in the ground. Female bees excavate small tunnels in well-drained, sandy, or lightly vegetated soils where they create individual chambers for their eggs and store pollen as food for their developing young. The remaining species nest in hollow plant stems, dead wood, or naturally occurring cavities. These nests are often so small and inconspicuous that we rarely notice them, despite sharing our landscapes with them every day.
Native bees are also remarkably efficient pollinators. Because they evolved alongside many of our native plants, they often pollinate flowers more effectively. Some species even perform “buzz pollination,” vibrating flowers to release pollen from plants such as blueberries, tomatoes, and many native wildflowers. Different native bee species are active at different times of the year and under varying weather conditions, ensuring that a wide diversity of plants receives the pollination it needs throughout the growing season.
Healthy landscapes can support many different pollinators, but nectar and pollen are finite resources. Research has shown that in areas with high densities of managed honey bee colonies, honey bees and native bees often forage on the same flowers. As a result, native bees may need to spend more time and energy searching for food, particularly during times when blooms are limited. This doesn’t mean honey bees are harmful or unwelcome; rather, it highlights the importance of ensuring there are abundant floral resources and habitat to support all pollinators while recognizing that our native bees have unique conservation needs.
The good news is that helping native bees is something every homeowner can do. Planting a diverse selection of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers that bloom from early spring through late fall provides a continuous source of nectar and pollen throughout the year.
This is also an important focus of Conservancy of the Sea Islands’ native plant initiatives. By encouraging the use of plants adapted to the soils, climate, and wildlife of the Sea Islands, the Conservancy helps residents create landscapes that provide food and shelter for native bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. Resources such as native plant guides, demonstration gardens, and habitat-restoration projects help make it easier to choose plants that are both well suited to local conditions and valuable to wildlife.
Early bloomers like foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) provide one of the first dependable food sources for emerging native bees in spring, while fall-blooming plants such as seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens) offer critical nectar and pollen late in the season as many bees prepare to overwinter. Just as importantly, consider leaving a few intentional patches of bare, well-drained sandy soil in sunny areas of your landscape. While it may seem unfinished to us, these small open spaces provide critical nesting habitat for the majority of our native bee species. Leaving dead flower stems and small pieces of natural wood standing through winter also creates valuable nesting sites for cavity-nesting bees.
The next time you notice a tiny bee disappearing into the sandy soil beneath your feet or visiting a native wildflower, take a moment to appreciate it. Chances are you’ve just encountered one of South Carolina’s incredible native pollinators, quietly carrying out work they have been doing here for thousands of years, long before honey bees became part of our landscape.
Every native flower you plant, every pesticide you avoid, and every small patch of bare ground you leave undisturbed helps sustain the pollinators that have called our Sea Islands home for millennia. By creating landscapes that support native bees, we’re not just helping pollinators; we’re fostering healthier ecosystems, more resilient communities, and a thriving environment for both wildlife and people.
