The Rhett’s Bluff Nature Area is a conservation easement held by the Conservancy. This peaceful freshwater wetland offers a quiet spot for reflection and connection with nature. For the Smith and Filbert families, however, it means much more. As you explore the area, you might encounter a plaque dedicated to the late Glen Smith, a devoted nature enthusiast and one of the island’s early residents from a time when it was vastly different. It’s people like Glen Smith and Joan Filbert Smith who help keep the spirit of the sea islands alive. Each year, family members gather at the property to honor their grandfather’s memory and reflect on the man he was. The more we share our love and appreciation for nature, the more others will be inspired to do the same. The Smith and Filbert families have created a truly beautiful and meaningful tradition.
